Parent/Teacher Conferences

Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held for Grades K-6

on November 3, 4, 5, 2010.

Today I sent out a blue sheet of paper in the monday envelope entitled Parent Conference Questionnaire. To make the most of our short conference time (15-20 minutes), please fill this sheet out and bring it to the conference.

Book Fair!!!

A book fair flyer went home today. This will give you a great idea for what books you want to get at the book fair; however, some of the books at the fair are not listed in the flyer.

Students and their families are welcome to shop at the Scholastic Book Fair in the Rose Park Library before and after school on Tues., Wed, & Thurs., Nov. 2,3, & 4. Profits from the Book Fair will benefit the library collection.

The details:

Tuesday, Nov.2nd: 7:30-8:15 a.m. and 2:30-4:00 p.m.
Wed., Nov. 3rd: 7:30-8:15 a.m. and 12:00-4:00 p.m. (Early Out for kids)
Thurs., Nov. 4th: 7:30-8:15 a.m. and 12:00-6:00 p.m. (Early Out for kids)

Math this week

Objective- Review Calendar Skills (For example: the days of the week, months of the year, and what a calendar looks like.)

Objective- Use objects to represent and count the quantities 4 and 5.

Idea for home- Find some standard playing cards. Get two of each cards for 1-5 and play matching/Go Fish. Remember to have your child touch each dot on the card and count how many things are on the card (this is to reinforce the skill of one to one correspondence).

Objective- Recognize and write the numerals that describe the quantities 4 and 5.

Idea for home-Have you or your child write 4 and 5. Beside each number, have them put the correct number of cereal, stickers, buttons, etc. next to the number. (This works for any number.)

Objective- Recognize and write the numeral that descries the quantity 0.

Idea for home- Play the game "Show Me". Get six baggies and fill each one with 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 things in a bag (Ie. one bag holds 5 buttons, another holds 4 crackers, another hold 3 crayons, and so on). Give the six bags to your child and tell them to show you the bag holding five things. Keep changing the number you tell them to show you; therefore, allowing you to see if your child can make the quantity in the bag match the number they are told.

Science

Last week we started our first science unit "Looking at the sky". This week the goal is for kids to:

-observe and describe objects in the daytime sky.

-infer that the sun provides light to the earth and conclude that light helps up to see.

Reading

We will be reading the book "Dinner at the Panda Palace" by Stephanie Calmenson.

Objectives: children will...

- identify characters

- preview and predict

- derive pleasure from reading, listening, and viewing

- recall and retell a story

Writing

We will be reviewing all the alphabet and the sounds each letter makes. I will show you examples of the writing the students are working on at conferences; however, the main goal for you child is to write any letters they hear in a word.

Sign Language Club

Sign Language club will be in the Rose Park gym from 3:05 to 3:45 every Tuesday. There was an amazing turn out for the first meeting last Tuesday. Remember students will need to have regular attendance. If a student has more than three unexcused absences they will no longer be able to participate in the club.
